My Little Pony: The Return of Chaos Teaser Trailer
Games Art project, 3rd Year (Uni) :bulletwhite: Rendered in 3ds Max; Edited in After Effects
YouTube Link

The teaser trailer for game based on the "Return of Harmony" story-arc from season 2, episodes 1 and 2, of Friendship is Magic. The game would feature a darker and more fleshed-out take on the events of the episodes, while retaining the family-friendly ethos and stylisation of the series. I must stress that this is a trailer for something that won't be made. This is it!
Yes the resolution is small, but due to the abundance of reflectivity and ray-casting, rendering the 40-odd seconds of footage took just under 100 solid hours, with 5-7 minutes per frame, 25fps. Also, if Celestia seems a little static, an element of the project brief was to not use any character animation.

All of the models and textures were made by me, apart from:
KP-ShadowSquirrel's Celestia Model (the Statue was also edited from the Twilight model)
BeckieRGB's Nightmare Moon Defeated vector and Discord's First Defeat vector
MisterAibo's Elements of Harmony vector

Featuring the fantastic voice-acting of:
NDLMongoose as Discord, and
PrincessRil as Princess Celestia

My Little Pony, its associated characters and scenes, are the property of Hasbro.
This is a non-profit, fan-created parody, made with no intent to infringe copyrights.
Again, this video advertises a fictional product and will never be made.
All sound effects used were from royalty-free sources. A list of creators can be provided on demand.

@00:28Thank you very much :3
I'd love to revisit this, fix some things, maybe re-render in a higher resolution... but it took nearly 100 solid hours to render this one, so... eech :iconnervouspinkieplz:

You did all of this by yourself? :O ( I mean, besides the credits you gave to other people lol)
Wow! You did a great job! :D That is impressive, I liked it! ^^
Would have been a nice "real game" :P but hours and days and months of work, though ;p

Yes ^^ And I did all of it in about a month. I wasted a whole lot of our allotted time.
And like I said, we weren't allowed to animate the characters, and it had to be under 60 seconds.
Yeah, I would adore a real MLP game... *sigh* I'd settle for a Skylanders-ripoff...

Someday, who knows! :P
And maybe you could try animated characters eventually, this would be interesting :P

I can try... I've rigged a character before (when you 'stick' the 'bones' to the model, so they can move according to the joints), and that in itself is a big task. Then it's a case of moving the parts in the same way you would draw an animation, with key-frames and 'tweening. As an artist, modelling was a push for me, let alone rigging and animating... I'm not trying to start a one-man studio xD but I'm definitely interested in giving it a try! I just don't know when I'll get to it ^^

This was a model I had to rig to pose.

hahah yeah, that seems like a lot of work, indeed!
But if you ever want to give it a try, I'll be happy to give you my opinion and criticism about the result ^^

Aaaaw <3 I know you would be willing to do the same thing. We're artists, it's good to support each other in what we do, and beyond friendship as well ;)
Unfortunately for you (and me, dah!), the art I'm doing these days is mostly my writing, and since it's in french... well, gets kinda hard to criticise something you can barely understand XD ('cause I'm sure you would be a precious counselor if you were to read my stuff and comment it!) ^_^

Yeah, I'd love to help you if I could >> Though I don't have the education you have in writing (I'd call the class English, but I suppose for you it'd be French xD), so I'm not sure I could offer much help beyond a second set of eyes for proof reading ^^; Does your boyfriend proof read for you? :o
I mean, I could always put it through a translator, but I'm pretty sure that would ruin your writing, and make any of my suggestions pointless in relation to the original piece.
It's a shame I'm so worthless with languages... At least you can speak two, otherwise these conversations would be much harder :P

@00:41Well, all the modelling, camera animation, lighting and rendering was done in Autodesk's 3ds Max, textures done in Adobe Photoshop, and the final compilation (video, sound, and additional effects like the bloom on the lightning-lit windows) was put together in Adobe's After Effects. I don't recommend you try buying those if you're just starting out... unless you're loaded :P
Autodesk has a fantastic student program, where you get all their products for free for three years, but i believe that Blender is a good, free 3D program.

If there's something specific you'd like to know how to do, I could try making a tutorial for it :) There are plenty already out there though. You should check out the incredible things they do in After Effects at www.videocopilot.net!
